How Casting Quality Control Works

Quality control is an essential part of precision casting production. Every casting must meet requirements for dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and mechanical material properties. That's why several inspection steps take place during production to help detect potential defects and ensure consistent quality of the final product.

How Casting Quality Control Works

Material inspection

The whole process begins with checking the chemical composition of the alloy. Spectral analysis is used to verify the correct proportion of individual elements in the melt, ensuring the material meets the required standards and technical parameters.

The correct material composition affects, for example:

  • the strength of the casting
  • the hardness of the material
  • the service life of the final part

Visual and dimensional inspection

Once the casting is produced, its surface and geometry are inspected. Visible defects, deformations, or imperfections arising during casting are the main focus.

Dimensions are checked using:

  • conventional measuring tools
  • coordinate measuring machines (CMM)
  • 3D scanning

The measurement results are then compared against technical documentation and CAD models.

Internal structure inspection

Not all defects are visible at first glance. That's why non-destructive testing methods are used, allowing the internal structure of the material to be inspected without damaging the casting.

The most commonly used methods are:

  • ultrasonic testing
  • X-ray analysis (RT)
  • liquid penetrant testing

These methods help detect internal cracks, porosity, or other material defects.

Mechanical testing

Tests performed include, for example:

  • tensile strength
  • hardness
  • toughness
  • material elongation
